Alex Mutsaars

I am 38 years old. By now I lost my wild streak, but I still have lots of ideas and challenges. After a period of long working days with lots of hours and shifts at the medical home care job and group transportation, I now have the time to meet the challenges.
Since childhoood I've been on the water a lot. I used several different boats. I got my boat license, CWO sailing 1,2 and 3. And also CWO diploma sea sailing 1.
The last 6 years I was a seaman on a regular basis. Through this I got a taste of life on the ocean. Salt, wind and an empty horizon with changing weather conditions. Some of the trips went to the Irish sea, from Denmark/Sweden, Algarve/the Netherlands, St Maarten, the Netherlands and several trips to the Mediterranean Sea. Here I also gained most of my practical experience.
The feeling of the wind through my hair, at least the few hairs I still have, were wonderful. The drive to make a solo crossing has been in me for my whole life. During the crossing from St Maarten back to the Netherlands the idea came to life.
I live in Geldrop and work at Air-Liquide.
Often I go to work by bike (43.5 miles). Next to that I swim 2 hours a week, run and have 1.5 hours of krav-maga (Iraelic self defence sport).
In short 50% seaman, 50% sportsman with a 100% plan I believe in  200%.

Gerrit-Jan Spaans

Gerrit-Jan Spaans, 'Uncle Gerrit' to friends. He lives at Mierlo, Brabant, the Netherlands, since 1973. He's certainly not a sportsman in heart and soul, but he does love adventure and life's challenges. He is also someone who doesn't give up. He will trade smoking for training. Since he comes from Scheveningen, he has seawater running through his veins, but he has more experience with kayaking on rivers and lakes than conquering world seas.
He has been active in commercials and media since 1980. In addition to this career he has also been active doing sound technique at pop and jazz festivals for nearly 20 years.
He started out as PR-man for the BTO-project, but quickly started working on repairs on the boat. When Alex asked him to be a reserve biker, he agreed. By now he is ready for the big challenge of surviving together with three completely different personalities in a 49 square foot space. His humor, improvisational skills and relativision abilities will bring a positive contribution to this trip. Time will tell...

Rob van Sundert

Being a water lover and fervent mountain biker and enthousiastic as always I answered yes to the question if I would like to bike along on this 'short' trip. This question followed after I taught Gerrit and Alex survival training at Falck Nutec. At this maritime training institute at Maasvlakte I teach people to survive at sea and escape from capsized and sunk helicopters. Of course I hope I will not have to use this knowledge and experience.
This expedition certainly fitts my life since birth. I came to earth with a swim stroke and shortly after my father taught me swimming at a local pool. I received several rescue certificates and since 15 years I volunteer as a lifeguard at the beautiful beaches in Zeeland, where the sea became a familiar surrounding for me.

Since 2002 I flew many times to Latin America to guide tourists on tours and expeditions and I have worked for local foundations on sustainability issues in the tourism industry. From the airplane I wondered how it would be like to be a small dot in an empty sea. After my recent height record of 20177 feet in the Andes I now stay at sea level to train hard. In my new home in Vlaardingen, 24 hours a day I have a hometrainer available for this goal.

During the crossing I will be 31 years old, at top strenght of my life. That asks for a new challenge! 4039 miles in a 4 person boat will be a great survival lesson for me. To discover how much power I have in my body and especially my mind is one of my motivations. To be different than most people and go where not many have been before is my way to be an example to others. Give up and turn around is not an option. Because of this I wish for a lot of support from many people, which ever way possible. Eventually, after we come back, we want to hand Villa Pardoes a beautiful cheque and one of my old dreams as adventurer comes with this to life; crossing the Atlantic Ocean. All the way on healthy muscle power. This is something other than our western energy addiction!
Pura vida!

Pierre van Leeuwen

My name is Pierre van Leeuwen.
I'm a sea sailor and like to bike and run, so I've volunteered as a
reserve (or perhaps to actually go!) and be one of the water bikers for
the Biking the Ocean Team.
I am married and have 3 children, two boys and one girl. I live in
Scheveningen and volunteer at the beach safety brigade at Scheveningen.
I have my own sailboat and have sailed for 29 years but I also enjoy wind
surfing. This waterbike project is a nice active challenge for me and
it's also for a great charity; Villa Pardoes
